Flavor Of The Month At Cold Stone

“Cold Stone Creamery, the Ultimate Ice Cream Experience®, is celebrating 2011 with its newest line of super-premium ice cream flavors. Each Gold Cone flavor will be featured in all stores nationwide for a limited time. During its respective featured time, some of the flavors will also be available as Creations, cupcakes, shakes, cakes, and more.”  It seems odd to me that a flavor of ice cream would be based on lemons, let along adding poppy seed’s to the mix.  Just a month after Baskin Robbins added their new lemon flavored ice cream here comes one from Cold Stone, alone with three other flavors on the way in their line of Gold Cone’s for this summer’s ice cream seekers.  The other flavors include chocolate hazelnut, strawberry basil, and mojito sorbet; as you can tell from the names of these flavors Cold Stone is attempting to start adding some different herbs to the mix in their line-up.  Perhaps the added herbs is an attempt to make people think they are healthier than they really are? or maybe they just add a nice flavor combination, I’m not too sure yet.  How would this odd ice cream combination work out? keep reading to find out.

 The company says, “Indulge and ease back into summer with this surprisingly sweet and tangy combination. Enjoy the flavor of your favorite muffin and real poppy seeds!”, poppy seeds sounded odd to me to but I decided to give it a whirl.  The flavor of the ice cream is probably unlike anything you’ve ever had before because it has poppy seeds combined with lemons in it which at first doesn’t sound terrific, but after trying out the flavor at Baskin Robbins eventually I thought that this tasted much fresher than that of Baskin’s.  I’m not sure I would start comparing it to a poppy seed muffin like the company suggests, but it is still different none the less.  Now I’m pretty sure that I wouldn’t choose this over my favorite chocolate flavor or even the other new flavors coming out in the line-up, but if you’re into trying out new flavors of ice cream this could be a good one to try out.  The texture of the poppy seeds in the ice cream was a little bit different because normally most people just prefer having a smooth ice cream and a nice mix in like the strawberries that you see in the picture, but the poppy seeds are too small sometimes to even find so they’re kind of a surprise when you bite down on one.  I think I could have done with out the poppy seeds overall and just stuck with another topping, however that would change the whole premise of the flavor.  Overall (3 out of 5).  As with all ice cream though enjoy this in moderation because it will set you back a lot if you’re trying to fit into any particular swimsuit this season.

The pros are that its refreshing and something different to try.

The cons are that the texture of the seeds and ice cream is odd.

Retro Twinkies Are Back!

Everybody is obviously familiar with what has become known as the normal flavor of Twinkies, but for many of you out there that statement is completely wrong because the true original flavor had a banana filling.  Hostess is following what many other food companies are currently doing, and rolling out some of their retro products in hopes of capturing that feeling of “everything was better when I was a kid” type motto.  So for the current generation of people who think that the original Twinkies are made from vanilla crème, think again and keep reading to get a lesson in what the original flavor of Twinkies is.

The original Twinkie not only has nostalgia with it now, but an awesome flavor of banana that goes along with it.  We’ll maybe it isn’t awesome tasting but it tastes good and is only around until June 11th so if you want to try it out, you better hurry up.  The taste is pretty much what you would expect it to be in that it has a banana taste that pairs well with the spongy cake; and that being said the texture is the exact same as with the vanilla crème filling.  So what you can expect from this product is a banana flavor with the same texture that you have come to know and love from the Twinkie brand; everything else aside this is nutritionally awful but will help some people lose up to 20 pounds in a year!  Did anyone else read that article?  Overall (4 out of 5).

The pros were that it had a strong banana flavor, nice spongy texture, has nostalgia.

The cons are that its limited edition, and nutritionally awful.

Pepperidge Farm Goldfish Sandwich Bread

Almost everybody can remember growing up and eating goldfish out of the little plastic container that is shaped like the tiny cracker, and if you didn’t you certainly did it with your own kid.  This new bread from Pepperidge Farm is a really interesting idea in that it uses their famous cracker and turns it into a sandwich bread.  Doing this could help you kids eat more whole grain bread because they make it in 100% whole grain as well, and the real kicker for some parents is that it doesn’t contain high-fructose corn syrup.  These are similar to the industry trend right now of the sandwich thins that have fewer calories and everything else, so it makes sense that they would introduce their own version of the popular item.

 
Because bread is going to be pretty much the same across the board when you buy it from a mass producer, don’t expect anything different from this new product.  The taste and texture are the exact same as you would find in any other sandwich thin form of bread, but what obviously sets this apart from the others is its fun new shape.  So if you can’t get you’re kids to eat any whole grains, this could be a way to get them to start.  Overall (4 out of 5).
 
The pros of this bread is that it is fresh, soft, and is shaped like a Gold Fish cracker, plus it comes in 100% whole wheat form.
 
The cons are that it’s just the same old bread.

Blue Bunny Wedding Cake Ice Cream.

Blue Bunny recently added a new flavor of ice cream to their already extensive line and this one is not too different.  The only thing that sets this apart from the others is that this one is endorsed by a celebrity.  The Ace of Cakes star Duff Goldman has put his name on the front of his carton and as you can imagine, it is a wedding cake themed ice cream which means that it has cake pieces mixed into it.  Blue Bunny says “Celebrate the marriage of sweet buttercream frosting flavored ice cream and white cake pieces all wrapped up in delicate ribbons of raspberry sauce.”  All of this sounded good to me, so I tried it out.

The flavor of the ice cream is pretty good considering it isn’t a higher brand name product of ice cream.  This flavor is in the line of Premium ice creams that Blue Bunny offers which I’m assuming just means it has a higher fat content than the rest of the line.  The texture of the cake pieces was a nice touch in that it broke up the continuous cold rush that the ice cream always provides.  The raspberry sauce was pretty tasty and added a nice texture as well; but the only thing that I don’t get is how this flavor is different from their Birthday Party flavored ice cream which is actually in the premium line as well.  Overall (3 out of 5) because the taste was good, and the cake pieces were a nice touch.

The pros of this new flavor is that the components of ‘frosting’, cake pieces, and raspberry sauce worked nicely together.

The cons were that it isn’t really different from their other flavor that is already on the market and was more expensive.

Homemade Marshmallows

Sure you could go out and just buy a bag of marshmallows at the store, and yes it would be much easier.  If you have ever had homemade marshmallows though, you know why doing that just isn’t an option anymore.  Homemade marshmallows are so much better than the storebought kind because they are warm, fluffy, and you can add any flavorings you want to the mix like vanilla or  even cocoa powder.  You can use these the same way you would in any recipe, but only makes sense to make them the star of your dish like using them in Smore’s or topping off your hot cocoa.  The recipe is really short and sweet so don’t be tempted to reach for the old standby anymore and try this out, I promise you won’t be let down.  This recipe will make enough to fill a large baking pan, so about 20 large marshmallows.

Ingredients:

  • 3 packages unflavored gelatin
  • 1 cup cold water, divided
  •  1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup light corn syrup  
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • Nonstick spray

Directions:

  1. Place the gelatin into the bowl of a stand mixer along with 1/2 cup of the water.
  2. In a small saucepan combine the remaining 1/2 cup water, granulated sugar, and corn syrup. Place over medium high heat, cover and allow to cook for 3 to 4 minutes. Uncover the pan and continue to cook until the mixture reaches 240 F; about 7 to 8 minutes. 
  3. Turn the mixer on low speed and, slowly pour the sugar syrup down the side of the bowl into the gelatin mixture. Once you’ve added all of the syrup, increase the speed to high. Continue to whip until the mixture becomes thick, about 12 to 15 minutes. Add the vanilla during the last minute of whipping. 
  4. Combine the confectioners’ sugar and cornstarch in a small bowl. Spray a 13 by 9-inch metal baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. Add the sugar and cornstarch mixture to coat the bottom and sides of the pan. Return the remaining mixture to the bowl for later use.
  5. When ready, pour the mixture into the prepared pan. Dust the top with enough of the remaining sugar and cornstarch mixture to lightly cover. Reserve the rest for later. Take a break and let your marshmallows rest for 5 hours.
  6. Turn the marshmallows out onto a cutting board and cut into 1-inch squares. Once cut, lightly dust all sides of each marshmallow with the remaining sugar and cornstartch mixture.

Kraft Bagelful’s Review

This isn’t a new product at all, but I really wanted to review this product ever since it came out so now is the time to do it.  This is an interesting idea for people who are always in a hurry before work and can never seem to make the best choices of either eating fast food or nothing at all.  Bagelful’s could help those people out by giving them a healthier morning meal of bagels and cream cheese.

To “make” the Bagelfuls all you need to do is put it in your toaster for about 1 minute and then it pops up and you’re ready to go.  The cool thing is that because the cream cheese is stuffed inside of the bagel, you don’t have to worry about getting out a knife and leaving a mess to clean up after you get home.  The line has 8 flavors that all sound really great, but I decided to try the original cream cheese bagel flavor.

My favorite thing about this product was that it tasted surprisingly good in the sense that it was exactly a bagel and cream cheese.  The odd thing about this product is that you would think the cream cheese would be extremely hot after coming out of the toaster, but in fact it comes out really cold.  My first bite was a confusing one because I was expecting to just go straight through the bagel, but had to stop at a denser middle then I was expecting.  The cream cheese was actually still a little bit frozen almost but soft enough to be quite pleasing like normally cream cheese would be.  The nutritional information is at the bottom and isn’t too terrible if you consider what people would normally eat for breakfast.  So if you’re a fan of the morning bagel I would highly recommend you give this line a try.  Overall (4 out of 5).

The pros were that it tasted like a bagel and cream cheese, single serve, less mess to clean up, convenience.

The cons could be that it’s pricier than an actual bagel and cream cheese.

Weight Watchers Natural Light Smoked Mozzarella String Cheese

Alright so a couple of new product are coming out onto the market currently and I thought that testing them out first before you all went out and spent your hard-earned money on them would be a good idea.  If you have not heard about this new line, it is a really large line of cheese’s ranging from slice, to string, to spread.  I’m not sure how different they could be than different cheese, but people see the Weight Watchers logo on something and get excited. 

Weight Watchers says, “Savor the smoky flavor of our natural Light Smoked Flavor String Cheese. Individually wrapped and just the right size, each 50 calorie stick makes snack time truly satisfying. Each stick is full of flavor and an excellent source of calcium.”  This line sounded appealing to me so as I was eating it I did notice the smokiness of the cheese and thought that it would make an interesting pairing with homemade pizza or something.  Some of the nice things about any string cheese is that they are handy and a nice afternoon snack for those of you on a diet and looking to slim down.  If you need more variety in your life then go ahead and try out the brand other cheese’s totalling 18 in all.  If you don’t want to pay the extra money for the name of Weight Watchers I would recommend trying a different line of flavored cheeses that will leave your wallet a little more full. 

Pros of this product is the nice smokey flavor and that’s about the only thing that differentiates this product from anything else. 

Cons are that it is more expensive and could be harder to track down than other brands.
